24 November 2011

I’m just back from fishing the Khancoban Region and so most of this report is using experiences from my shop staff and other anglers. Over the weekend the fishing continued to be good with the shore based angling still good but an improvement in the boat trolling on Sunday after the cooler change.

The change brought a few more trout to the surface and so the trolling was very good. This coming week will see continuation of reasonably good weather with a high pressure system moving over the mountains. The best fishing will again be land based with both bait fishing and lure spinning the best choices. A few fish are still being spotted cruising the shoreline. If you have a boat and want to troll you are best keeping in close to the shoreline and keep lines well out.

FREE LURES.

Post your photos with a trout and a Tasmanian Devil or Rapala lure and win prizes in our weekly best fish competition.

Trolling.
It is still definitely worth trolling some minnow lures early in the morning off the lead core lines over the weedbeds. Scorpions, Stumpjumpers and Rapalas are a few lures that are worth trying and I would expect that some of the bigger browns will be found in sheltered weedy bays. Surface troll in the shallows early with these minnow lures and then later in the morning change to Tasmanian Devils. Best colour is greens and golds or on overcast days try the Holographic or the Brown Bomber number 48 Tasmanian Devil. Try the new Tasmanian Devil colors 102 and 105 as I am getting some good reports on most of the new colours. The best Rapalas still seem to be the bigger 9 and 11cm for the bigger trout and those with some orange underneath going best. If you want to give the trout something they haven’t seen before try putting out one of the new Orange Tiger Rapala, they have been doing very well flat lined close to the shoreline.

Lake Spinning
Lure spinning has still been good with the rising lake level. There are trout about and the best fishing is in the shallows early and deep water later in the middle of the day. The Tasmanian Devil Y82 and Y48 have both been good and so is the Holographic and keep a number 72 Pink Panther in your tackle box as well. Minnow lures like floating Rapalas, Stumpjumpers and other minnow style lure in either natural rainbow trout and brown trout patterns or gold colours to represent the Jindabyne goldfish that the trout love to chase and eat.

Call into my shop and I will show you some of the better soft plastics that we are having great success on over the last week.

River Spinning
The Thredbo is still fishing well, although lower and clearer this week and Celtas and Gillies Bendbacks are fishing the best. Minnow lures like the brown and rainbow trout pattern Rapalas are also good. In deeper and bigger pools try some of the metal blades hat we have in my shop.

We will help out with the best colours and they best way to use them to get results.

Fly Fishing Lake
With the water still rising a little, you should at least be able to see the fish cruising close into the lake edges. Fishing the small bays and inlets should get some results very early and late in the day if you’re careful not to spook the trout. Woolley Buggers, Craig’s Night time and Williamson’s Goldfish have been the flies well worth using at dawn and dusk. The shallow bays on the lake are worth a try early before the sun rises but after that you had better be fishing deep.

For visitors to the Snowy’s we have a full range of fishing tackle for hire at my shop and fishing tours are now available.

Have you got a report from your latest fishing trip? Have you any photos that you can e-mail me? I can use the information to add into my own reports and your photo might not only end up in my report but might also go into a draw for the best fish of the month which will win you a $50 Tassie Devil Tackle Pack.

The 38th Snowy Mountains Trout Festival finished up last Friday and results can be found at www.troutfestival.com.au

The winner of the major prize for the lucky entrant attendance draw of a Quintrex Explorer Boat and Trailer was won by young Zoe Adams. With a bit of luck she might let her dad drive the boat for her until she’s old enough to get a boating licence.

Congratulations to Byron Boehm who won the largest Brown spinning weighing 2475 gr and also the Soft Plastics Category Largest Rainbow weighing 1235 gr. Byron works part time for me so you may have met him in my shop or helping out on a tour. Byron also won some mystery weight prizes with a total of 5 wins for the week.

Explore Khancoban Fly Fishing Weekend
I still have 2 positions left for my fly fishing weekend on the 18th, 19th and 20th November. Accommodation is at Queens Cottage in Khancoban and we will be fishing quite a lot of private waters. Go to my web site for more information and costs.

Last Weekends Fishing
With the Trout Festival on over the week there were plenty of tales to tell and the results show that the fishing was better off the lake foreshore than boat trolling. Trollers however did Ok but just needed a little time spent which was often hard when you could see anglers on the bank pulling in trout after trout all the time.

Fly anglers also did well around the lake edges with stories of some big fish lost.

LAKE LEVEL and TEMPERATURE
Water temperatures have risen to about 15 degrees Celsius after a couple of lovely warm days over the weekend and this should see the fish start to bite on the surface. The level of the lake is also still rising and should continue to do so for a another few weeks at least and may come up a lot further if we get rain.

Best methods to catch a trout.
Best method – Bait fishing.
Best lake lure – Green and gold Tasmanian Devils like number Y50 or 50. Best Thredbo River Lure – Celtas gold or Gillies Bendback in gold.
Best lake area – Hayshed and Hatchery Bays.
Best fly method lake – Hammils Killer has been good last week.
Best River – The lower Thredbo is still the best.
Best River Fly – Bead head nymphs and maybe a mayfly pattern or ant pattern some evenings.

Conditions have been better than last week with light SW winds glassing off the gulf. Bait schools are spread wide and far throughout the gulf and many pelagic captures have been reported.

Sailfish have been harder to entice with bait being plentiful, but for those willing to put in the hard yards the rewards are well worth the effort. The school mackerel however are prevalent with numerous boats reporting big numbers in the gulf.

One local boat headed out in search of big marlin this week and raised seven in the one day. There were some big blues amongst the mix, including one that nearly spooled the Tiagra on the first run. Some small blacks and two around the 100kg mark also showed up and despite the northerly being strong on land, it was calm at sea for the team onboard.

Rock lobster has been the dinner for many free divers this week. Picking the right day and hoping for half decent visibility is part of the challenge! Remember to renew your licence and pick up the new size gauge in store.

Whiting have been caught along the beaches around Learmonth with prawns being the bait of choice. Further down the gulf has been yielding some great queenfish captures. Small, rapidly retrieved metal lures have tempted these often-wary fish. We have still have reports of people getting blue swimmer crabs?!? Wow, what a year it has been for them. We are spoilt for choice up here with fresh seafood and this time of year the locals have great opportunities to take in some relaxing times on the warm water with the town so quiet.

Summer fishing can be challenging with flies, and boy have we had some of those this week? The flies have been thick both on shore and off shore. I’m sure most stores nearly sold out of fly veils this week. The rewards of summer fishing can be great though, with increased numbers of spangled emperor along the shoreline and increased activity in the open waters, especially dolphin fish, wahoo and big marlin. It is also a time when there are less people in town and more camping spots available along the coast. Late evenings fishing can be very enjoyable and at least there are no flies after dark!

Wind, wind and more wind was the story in Exmouth this past week. For those with larger boats or for the smarter skipper reading the ever changing winds, fish were on the bite. Deeper waters offshore have still been producing good numbers of billfish and sailfish in the gulf have been a popular choice for many sports fishing anglers.

With weather conditions so unpredictable land based fishing has been the preferred option. Good numbers of spangled emperor have been reported and some impressive capturers have occurred along the west side.

Be sure to respect the sanctuary zones and remember the legal size for spangled emperor is 41cm. Dawn and dusk is good for these species and with the warmer weather, it’s a nice start or end to the day.

There have been plenty of tuna in the gulf, along with the odd cobia cruising the back of Bundegi reef. If you have a small tinny and can get out from Bundegi between the southerlies of a morning and afternoon, it is a short run to the ramp from the fishing grounds. In that area you can anchor up and berley for emperor and get the odd inquisitive trout or cobia cuising past. Queenfish seem to be ever present and will take to a small live hardy head or small fast popper or minnow.

Ramp Closed
Did you know that the Tantabiddi boat ramp is closed from November 14th till January? It is closed for the construction of the new double ramp. The EGFC camp-out for January will be held at Bundegi this year instead. Last year this weekend camp-out and fishing comp was a huge hit with the locals and several visitors. Cobia. Caught in the Gulf

The Lobster Season has begun! Make sure you know the rules and limits that are specific to Exmouth. We are very lucky in Exmouth to be able to get five different species of rock lobster, which include the western red, green, coral, ornate and pack horse. There is a brochure you can pick up from fisheries or in store on limits and it’s advisable to have a good pair of dive gloves, especially for the big ones!
