What we look for in a fishing boat at The FISHING DVD

Experience
In over 35 years of professional camera and sound work for TV shows, videos and DVDs, we’ve been in and out of a lot more boats than we care to count! Over that period of time there have been some radical shifts of perception in terms of what qualifies as a good, functional fishing boat. It’s no longer enough that a craft simply floats on the water and has somewhere for an angler or two to stand and hold onto a fishing rod! User expectations have increased and, sadly, many boat manufacturers have struggled to stay abreast of these rapidly developing expectations.

Specifics
Over this same passage of time, our own demands on a fishing/filming boat have also altered radically. Today, when we choose vessels to use as work boats for producing The FISHING DVD, we set out with some extremely specific requirements in mind.

Seaworthy
First and foremost, the hulls we choose must be safe, seaworthy and comfortable; not only for us and the various presenters, guests, local experts and guides we work with, but also for the expensive camera & sound equipment we use on a daily basis.
Excessively wet, hard-riding hulls need not apply!

Stability
Secondly, these vessels must be as stable as possible under a broad range of sea conditions, in order to provide us with a steady filming platform. We don’t want you getting seasick at home watching the horizon dip and tilt dramatically on your TV screen!

Versatility
Finally, but just as importantly, our boats must perform exceptionally well as serious, multi-function fishing vehicles; giving us abundant tackle storage and the ability to pursue modern angling styles as diverse as trolling, bottom fishing, jigging, lure casting and fly fishing, to name just a few.

Economy
On top of these core considerations, we also demand rigs that are easy to tow and launch (often in remote locations), reasonably economical to run & maintain. Combine all of these factors and we’re sure that you’ll begin to see just how choosy we need to be when selecting new boat/motor/electronics/trailer packages for our work!
